Mountain Bike Trips to Desert Lake
Enjoy the unique experience of mountain biking the 37 km from Lago del Desierto to El Chaltén. Enjoy the diverse views, waterfalls, and forests along scenic Provincial Route 41.
Description of the output
We leave the Patagonia Travelers' Hostel in the morning via a shuttle to Lago del Desierto (located about 37 km north of town), with our bikes loaded onto a trailer. Upon arrival at the lake, we'll return the bikes to you, and before heading back to town, you can enjoy the lake for as long as you like by taking some of the following hikes:
Hiking the trails around the lake
There are two trails, one of very easy difficulty and lasting 10 minutes that leads to a pebble beach from where you can appreciate the immensity of the lake. And another of medium difficulty that separates the southern end from the northern end of the lake, with a length of 12 km. - we do not recommend doing this entire trail, since it requires 10 hours round trip; but you can do a short section to one of the different pebble beaches along the shore -
Hike to the Huemul Lagoon and Huemul Glacier
Medium difficulty trail, lasting 45 minutes (one way), that leads to the shore of the lagoon with a view of the Huemul Glacier. (The trail is located on private land. Entrance to the trail is not included in the price of the excursion).
Then, the return to the town (37km - 4 hours on average) is on your own, without a guide, through the Provincial Route Nº 41 gravel, which borders the banks of the Río de las Vueltas, being able to make all the stops you want to appreciate the different landscapes and natural attractions, among them: the Argentine Salto, La Laguna Cóndor, the bike path, the Chorrillo del Salto, etc.
It should be noted that although the difficulty is intermediate, the road is entirely gravel, with many loose stones and ups and downs the entire way. This characteristic makes the excursion not difficult on a technical level, but it is physically demanding and requires experience in this type of activity.
We leave every day with a minimum of 2 passengers and a maximum of 10 (check availability via email).
Reservations must be made in person at the hostel reception at least 24 hours in advance. They are confirmed by paying 100% of the reservation. We recommend booking two or three days in advance. At reception, we can help you choose the best day for your trip, depending on the weather and availability.
Departures are not cancelled due to rain unless conditions are very adverse and the company deems it unsafe to proceed.
The departure includes:
· Transfer from El Chaltén to Lago del Desierto with an explanation of the route.
· Full-day availability of mountain bikes (until 7 p.m.).
